Bucks cut ties with NBA champion in favor of desired lob threat in proposed trade with Hawks

The Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA Cup championship and are looking to build upon that run. With the trade deadline about six weeks away, it would make sense for their front office to turn to the trade market for potential upgrades.

In recent reports, it was revealed that Milwaukee is seeking a lob threat to complement Brook Lopez.

Fortunately, the Atlanta Hawks appear to have an expendable lob threat. Jake Fischer, an NBA insider, revealed the Hawks would like to move on from Clint Capela by the trade deadline. Capela is on an expiring contract and Atlanta is not expected to retain the veteran center due to the growth of Onyeka Okongwu.

A Bucks deal for Capela could look similar to the following:

Bucks receive: Clint Capela

Hawks receive: Bobby Portis, Pat Connaughton, 2031 first-round pick swap

Capela would help the Bucks’ rim protection behind Lopez and Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Swiss big man is averaging 1.0 blocks this season, with a career average of 1.5 blocks. On the season, Capela has converted on 30 of his 37 alley-oop attempts while 28 percent of his field goal attempts are dunks. Capela could open up the pick-and-roll for Damian Lillard and Antetokounmpo, but particularly Lillard.

Defenses will have to decide whether to go over the top of the screen to discourage an open Lillard three, or go under the screen to prevent a lob to a rolling Capela. James Harden was able to manipulate defenses with the pick-and-roll for years during his time in Houston due to his three-point shooting threat combined with Capela’s nearly unmatched lob skills.

As an up-and-coming team, Atlanta agrees to this deal to gain better positioning in the 2031 draft. Portis could be moved for more draft capital if necessary while Connaughton was primarily included for salary-matching purposes.

For Milwaukee, Capela’s expiring contract could help ease their tight salary cap situation assuming they’d have the opportunity to re-sign him at a more affordable number this offseason.

Spurs emerge as possible destination for Kings’ $163 million superstar

The San Antonio Spurs have a potential superstar duo in Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle, and now San Antonio is looking to create a Big 3.

The Athletic’s Sam Amick and Anthony Slater reported on Saturday that the Spurs are going after the Sacramento Kings’ De’Aaron Fox on the trade market.

“League sources say one team in particular — the San Antonio Spurs — is positioning itself to pursue (Fox) … as a possible partner for Victor Wembanyama,” Slater and Amick said.

The Spurs have the first-round draft capital to make a too-good-to-refuse offer to Sacramento, as pointed out by Forbes’ Evan Sidery on Saturday.

“The Spurs are positioning themselves to make a pursuit for De’Aaron Fox,” Sidery said.

“San Antonio has collected tons of future first-round picks to make an eventual run for a star to pair alongside Victor Wembanyama.”

Bleacher Report’s Adam Wells also joined in on the Fox-Spurs buzz.

“Fox and the Kings could be nearing a tipping point,” Wells said.

“The Kings are currently 12th in the West with a 13-15 record.”

“San Antonio is a sleeping giant in the trade market because Victor Wembanyama seems like a player who a young, established star will want to play with. It also helps that the Spurs have 12 first-round draft picks between 2025 and 2031 that can be used to build a trade package around.”

Entering Saturday, Fox was averaging 26.2 points and 6.1 assists per game.

Fox turned 27 on Friday.

76ers ‘loved’ $36 million NBA champion guard before offseason trade

t’s always annoying when teams miss out on valued players that could have been game-changers for them.

Alex Caruso may not be a star, but he’s one of the NBA’s best defenders with championship experience who could have been useful for the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers missed their shot when the Chicago Bulls traded him to the Oklahoma City Thunder during the offseason.

NBA OFFICIAL HIGHLIGHTS

Even more frustrating was that Josh Giddey was all it cost to get him. Jake Fischer reported that many teams wanted Caruso before the Bulls traded him to the Thunder, including Philadelphia.

“The Warriors, again, were by no means alone in their determination to pry Caruso from the Bulls. Sacramento offered the No. 13 pick and more before this past June’s draft. Houston loved Caruso. Philadelphia loved Caruso. Memphis, sources said, once proposed multiple first-round picks before the Grizzlies sent out a similar amount of draft capital to acquire Marcus Smart,” Fischer reported on The Stein Line.

The Sixers could get their chance to sign Caruso in 2025
Caruso’s contract expires when the 2024-25 season ends. If he and the Thunder don’t agree to an extension before then, that opens the door for the Sixers to bring him in.

It remains to be seen if Caruso won’t sign an extension with the Thunder because they’ve been one of the best NBA teams. One thing for sure is that Caruso has been one of the most underpaid players in the NBA since signing his contract in 2021.

If the Sixers signed Caruso, he wouldn’t solve their shooting issues like some of the other sharpshooters who have been floated as trade targets. Still, his on-ball defense and versatility would come in handy for a team that lacks a pure defensive specialist.

Infamous 76ers trade given harsh assessment seven years later

If given the chance, the Philadelphia 76ers would love to reverse many of the franchise’s poor decisions in hindsight. One recent one was trading Jayson Tatum’s rights to the Boston Celtics for Markelle Fultz’s draft rights in 2017.

This trade may have been the difference between the Sixers being ousted year after year in the second round and winning the NBA championship. Tatum has gone on to become one of the NBA’s best players and is coming off a title run while Fultz is currently a free agent.

Fultz proved himself good enough that the Sixers could entertain bringing him back, but it’s fair to say that Tatum-for-Fultz was one of the most lopsided NBA trades in recent memory.

However, even if that deal ended in snake eyes for the Sixers, Bleacher Report was a little harsh on it compared to some other trades that fit a similar description over the last 25 years.

The infamous Tatum-Fultz ranked No. 14, one spot ahead of the Celtics setting back the Brooklyn Nets for years when they traded Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett for the Nets’ future in 2013. In other words, they considered that more important

Why the Fultz trade wasn’t as bad
On the one hand, it was a bad deal for the Sixers since Tatum panned out phenomenally as he has. On the other, it’s not like this trade ruined the Sixers. They still consistently made the playoffs and even had the best record in the conference at one point. The same cannot be said about the Nets when they made their trade with the Celtics.

Because of that Celtics-Nets trade, Brooklyn endured miserable seasons with no immediate upside because they agreed to give up high lottery picks for multiple years to Boston and Cleveland.

Because of that trade, the Celtics would have never been able to get Tatum had it never happened. Fultz may have been a dud, but he didn’t set the Sixers back. Pierce and Garnett were past their primes when the Nets got them, proving to set the Nets back for a long time.

Game logs for LeBron’s son on South Bay Lakers

Bronny James is set to spend some time in the NBA G League.

After appearing in four NBA games, James was assigned to the South Bay Lakers, LA’s G League affiliate. In the G League, James will be expected to see an expanded role for an opportunity to continue his development into a rotational player in the NBA.

Sacramento Kings vs. Los Angeles Lakers – Game Highlights

A G League assignment is not necessarily a demotion, especially for a late second-round pick. Grizzlies guard Scotty Pippen Jr. and Hornets guard Seth Curry are two second-generation NBA players who used the G League as a launching pad to become effective at the NBA level.

As James looks to hone his skills and continue improving during his rookie year, The Sporting News will keep a log of his performances during his G League assignment.

Lakers have ‘inquired’ with Wizards about $45 million former Celtics guard

The Los Angeles Lakers may have given up on the idea of acquiring a superstar before February 6, but trading for more scoring remains a necessity.

If LA continues to rely on LeBron James and Anthony Davis to carry the load, both guys will be gassed by the time the playoffs roll around.

Sacramento Kings vs. Los Angeles Lakers – Game Highlights

Lakers GM Rob Pelinka is aware of this situation. That’s why Pelinka has reportedly been talking to the Washington Wizards about a trade, per Forbes’ Evan Sidery.

“The Lakers have recently inquired on Malcolm Brogdon in trade talks with the Wizards,” Sidery posted to X on Saturday.

“Los Angeles is a team to watch potentially acquiring both Brogdon and Jonas Valanciunas from Washington.”

Snagging Brogdon alone would be massive for the Lakers. He’s a former Sixth Man of the Year (with the Boston Celtics in 2022-23) who at 32 years old is still playing at an elite level.

But if Pelinka could somehow pull off acquiring both Brogdon and Valančiūnas, LA would be in optimal position for a playoff run.

The Lakers were owners of a three-game winning streak entering Sunday and stood at 16-12, good for fifth place in the West.
